The Billboard Music Awards had been held every year since 1990 until it stopped in 2006. The awards ceremony was revived in 2011 and is now held every year in May.

Nominations are selected through a voting process received by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. Finalists are chosen based on album and digital song sales, streaming, radio, airplay, touring, and social engagement. These measurements are tracked year-round.
