Cat That Was Shy in a Shelter for Years Instantly Became a Kitten Again in Her Furever Home

Many adorable and purrfect adult cats get overlooked in shelter environments. It’s not unusual for shy adults to wait for five years or more to find a home. Most of the time, people pass them over for more extroverted cats and cutie patootie kittens.

Yet, if people gave them a chance, they would be richly rewarded with the love of their lives! Here’s how one kitty, Trixie, reacted when finally getting her chance after years in a Wisconsin shelter. There’s no missing how very happy she was on adoption day. And the staff were overjoyed, too!

Even better, Trixie is now helping many other pets being overlooked in shelters.

A Glimpse of Trixie’s First Night Home

When Trixie was just a kitten of six months old, she became pregnant and went to a small-town Wisconsin shelter. That was in June 2017, and unfortunately, she became the shelter’s longest resident. Everyone hoped somebody would choose her. But like many cats in such an environment, she was nervous and retreated from (most) strangers.

In five years, she had only one application, prompting the staff to “jump for joy” when they got one. It was Lexi Hart, who had searched for hours to find a cat just like this one. After their beloved cat, Kitters, passed from oral cancer, she and her husband wanted to do something positive to honor her life.

Ameowzingly, Hart searched specifically for cats that had waited too long in area shelters. When they went to meet Trixie, the kitty seemed to know these were her people. Although she usually hid, she came right over to rub on their legs. It was definitely a good sign, and the family adopted her in April 2022.

At home, she continued to adjust relatively fast, looking around in wonder while making biscuits on the carpet. Just look at how happy she was to be in a loving home at last!

Trixie Returned to Her Lost Kittenhood

In many other TikToks, we see that Trixie fully reverted to her kittenhood. She had missed out having fun and being carefree, which she so deserved. This is what you can provide a cat waiting in a shelter!

Trixie Became Mom’s ‘Best Friend’

This kitty is the purrfect companion for the Hart family, and burst out of her shell quickly. Most times, cats can take about three months to feel so much at home. So it’s unusual to see how fast this kitty adjusted.

“She plays like a kitten, is glued to me every minute of the day, and her favorite napping place is on her mama’s lap,” Hart wrote. “She’s my best friend. This made me think about how many people passed on her because they didn’t ‘see her; people that probably would have adopted her if they met her. She’s exactly the cat that many people were looking for, but no one knew she existed. So she sat at a shelter for 5 years,” Hart shared.

“Jokes on them, huh, Trixie girl ✨ adoption can completely change cats’ behaviors! Take my advice, TikTok… the before and after can look so different (in the best possible way).”

A Spotlight for Shelter Pets

If Trixie had a spotlight, she might have found a home sooner, which inspired a new project. Now, pets waiting in shelters get a big boost, reaching millions of views they wouldn’t have otherwise.

Enter: Wisconsin’s Waiting Pets. I’m committed to continue finding and sharing ‘Trixie’s friends’ from other shelters to help get them some extra exposure like Trixie would have benefit from,” Hart shared on the Facebook page.
