In a surprising turn of events, a lioness at a private sanctuary has given birth to eight cubs, defying expectations despite being on birth control. The lioness, who had a contraceptive implant months ago to manage her reproduction, shocked everyone by delivering a large litter. It appears the contraceptive may have expired, leading to this unexpected outcome.
Unfortunately, the lioness has rejected all eight cubs, leaving them in the care of the sanctuary’s dedicated staff. While five of the cubs seem to be recovering well, three are in critical condition. These weaker cubs are struggling with feeding and appear lethargic, casting uncertainty over their survival.
The sanctuary, managed by the Parks Authority, hopes this rare occurrence will attract tourists and boost their business during the holiday season. The birth of these eight cubs surpasses the previous record of six cubs set by another lioness, Linus and Chyna. While it will take time for the cubs to be strong enough to interact with each other, the situation has brought an early holiday cheer and a much-needed lift to Zimbabwe’s recovering tourism industry.
