Migaloo the male humpback whale has recently been spotted off the coast of Australia. Migaloo is a world famous white whale that is believed to be at least 26 years old.
He was first spotted off the coast of New South Wales by Byron Bay in June of 1991. Researchers believe he was about eight to ten years old when he was first spotted. His age is a very impressive number because αℓbιnιsm usually indicates larger health problems, but Migaloo has just kept swimming for the past 26 years.
Migaloo is not an average whale, and he also is not an average albino. His eyes are brown instead of the classic pink associated with αℓbιnιsm. DNA testing through the Australian Marine Mammal Centre determined that he was definitely an αℓbιnσ though. The testing also confirmed that he is indeed a male.
Sightings of Migaloo happen fairly regularly and are usually confirmed through photographs. It is hard to miss a whale like Migaloo. Paul Faherty saw him from his boat most recently and said this about the experience, “The white glow coming towards you, it’s indescribable. There’s nothing like that.”
Recently another white humpback whale was spotted off the coast of Queensland, Australia. The whale was a newborn calf that was given the name Chalkie, but his nickname is Migaloo Jr.
